Priority Areas for OHS in the New Year

December 11, 2024

With businesses and industry preparing to resume operations this New Year, it’s the ideal time to discuss Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) with a view to leveraging it as the cornerstone of a successful and sustainable business. Here are the key priority areas that every company should focus on as they kick off the new year:

Refresh and Update Risk Assessments

Work environments constantly evolve, and the start of the year is the perfect time to revisit your risk assessments. Identify new hazards introduced by changes in operations, equipment, or personnel. Ensure that all potential risks are documented and mitigation measures are updated to reflect current circumstances.

Key Action: Schedule a comprehensive workplace inspection and involve employees in identifying potential risks. This participatory approach not only improves safety but also fosters a culture of collective responsibility.

Reinforce OHS Training and Awareness

After a break, employees might need a refresher on safety protocols. Comprehensive training ensures that everyone is equipped with the knowledge and skills to maintain a safe work environment.

Key Action: Conduct refresher training sessions on core safety practices such as emergency procedures, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and equipment handling.

Ensure Mental Health and Well-being Support

The return to work can be stressful for many employees, especially in high-pressure industries. Prioritising mental health not only supports employee well-being but also enhances productivity and reduces the risk of workplace incidents.

Key Action: Establish a mental health support program, provide access to counselling services, and encourage open conversations about well-being.

Review Safety Equipment and PPE

Safety equipment and PPE are the first lines of defence in protecting employees. The New Year is an excellent time to inspect, repair, or replace outdated or damaged equipment.

Key Action: Perform an inventory check of all safety gear. Ensure equipment complies with current industry standards and is readily available to all staff.

Update Emergency Preparedness Plans

Disaster can strike at any time, and preparedness is key to minimising harm. Emergency response plans should be reviewed annually to ensure they are up-to-date and practical.

Key Action: Conduct a simulated emergency drill to test response times and identify areas for improvement. Make sure emergency contact lists and communication systems are updated.

Enhance Reporting and Monitoring Systems

Accurate reporting and monitoring are essential to prevent accidents and identify recurring safety concerns. Leverage technology to simplify this process.

Key Action: Implement or upgrade digital tools to track incidents, conduct audits, and monitor compliance in real time. Train employees to use these systems effectively.

Focus on Leadership Accountability

OHS is a shared responsibility, but leadership sets the tone. When managers and supervisors are actively engaged in safety initiatives, employees are more likely to follow suit.

Key Action: Establish clear OHS roles and responsibilities for leaders and include safety metrics as part of their performance evaluations.

Wrapping Up

The start of the New Year provides a blank slate to strengthen your OHS framework. By addressing these key areas, companies can foster a safer, healthier, and more productive workplace. Let 2024 be the year that sets a new standard for occupational safety and health in your organisation.
